High quality Sheffield web design

Websites crafted with care in Sheffield

Hello, we're Unspun, and we make websites from our office in Sheffield, for lovely people all over the UK. We're probably best described as a small web design firm, but we've got a reputation for punching well above our weight, and we're capable of delivering large scale projects and undertaking complex web development work.

We're massive fans of doing things right, and our approach to building websites is focused around taking the time to get the details spot on, so your website does a great job of being a website.

We're not about churning out low quality, high volume work to sell supplementary SEO or social media marketing services. We're web builders, who build high quality websites.

All this means we're able to hone in on the value we can extract from a project, and build websites that deliver return on investment for our customers. We love nothing more than seeing our websites grow to become integral parts of an organisation

So, whether you're in the Sheffield city region and want to support a local business with a reputation for delivering great websites, or you're from further afield, and you're looking for a reliable web development partner you can trust, get in touch, we'd love to talk about web design Sheffield (and SEO strategies 😏).

Why you should choose Unspun for your next web project

Our two founders, Neil and Ed, haven't just been doing web design services and web development for over fifteen years each, they've been doing it together for most of that time. We've been around the block more than once, we've even won a few awards for our work, although we don't really like being one of those firms that describes themselves as "award winning". The point is we're very comfortable building websites of all shapes and sizes, and very practised at taking even the most complex set of requirements and turning them into a functional website.

As mentioned, we've got a reputation for high quality output that outperforms the size of our team, but don't just take our word for it, check out some of our previous projects. We've worked with companies of all shapes and sizes, from training providers delivering courses on a national scale, to rural accountancy firms located in the back of beyond.

We've operated at board level, helping (successfully) pitch websites to funding panels, and advising on long term web strategies, we've worked with charities operating on a shoestring budget, and we've helped individuals get up and running with their first businesses.

Our development services cross the same spectrum of diversity, with previous web projects including bespoke ordering and payment systems for an internet service provider, right down to single page websites for honest Sheffield based sole traders.

All that said however, just when we think we've seen it all, a new project will come along and surprise us. It's probably why we're still here doing this job after ten plus years at the grindstone. Maybe your project will be the next pleasant surprise, give us a call and let's chat about it.

Some of our work

Bespoke web development solutions

Some companies build websites by picking templates off the shelf, smashing together a few plugins, pressing upload on a woefully insecure hosting platform, and then charge you through the nose for it. And so do we! Just kidding.

Our websites are bespoke, which means we actually put some effort into making them uniquely represent you and your business. When we're undertaking a new web project, we go through an extensive design phase, where we figure out how the website should function, and mould it's form around that function. We're free of restrictions imposed by pre-built plugins, and we can focus on maximising those features that are going to deliver value for you.

On those laps of the block we've done, we've picked up some pretty sweet web development services skills too, allowing us to go beyond the basic functionality offered up by most websites. There's a kind of magic in taking a set of ideas and turning them into reality through code, and again, it's probably this magic that keeps us going week in week out. We love to build things that are interesting, whether it's a checkout process, or a cool 3D spinning logo like you'll find on our homepage

Our happy place is in Laravel, a web development and tooling framework, that allows us to speed up our web development process. We're not too grumpy outside of Laravel though, and we're capable working in a number of different platforms and content management systems, including OctoberCMS and Shopify.

Our web design process

Creating something beautiful requires a bit of work, and website design is no different. To make a website a reality, we've developed a bullet proof process, that ensures we're able to nail the design every time. It's like magic, but it's not, it's just work, sorry to ruin the illusion. Here's how we do it.

  • The discovery phase

We meet, in Sheffield, at your office, or in cyberspace, wherever works, and we get to know you and your business. While we are trying to extract requirements for the website from you, these meetings are much more, and form the basis of a partnership moving forward. So we generally try to take it easy and keep things high level at this stage.

  • The planning phase

This is where Neil gets serious and puts on his web designers hat. We focus on the reasons the website needs to exist, and think about what we can do to solve them. Sometimes this is ridiculously easy and you wonder why we even have a process, sometimes this takes hours and hours.

  • The design phase

This bit is all about translating what we've learned from the previous two stages into shapes and colours you can see on a page. We do all the layout and graphical work, show it to you, work through feedback, iterate, and do it all again until we're happy the design meets all objectives from functionality to user experience. Again, a lot of the time we just nail it on the first go, but sometimes things need a lot of finessing!

  • The development phase

This bit's dead boring, so we try our best not to involve the client in it, unless they want to understand how the website is coded of course. We'll knuckle down, and our development team will get the coding done, and come back to you with a working website that you can load up on your phone and take for a spin.

  • The testing phase

In reality this bit runs in parallel with the development phase, because we want to be testing and testing and testing again as features become ready. The goal is to make sure we don't release a website that's full of bugs, we want it to work well, so we do loads of technical testing, and get you to do testing to make sure things are in line with expectations.

  • The launch phase

With all the website development and testing done, it's time to release the website upon the world. It's usually a fairly simple process of just flicking things over from the testing environment, to a live production environment on the domain of your choice. It's much less climactic than a rocket launch, but Neil will cheer at launch time if requested by clients.

Frequently asked questions

Who are they asked by? We don't really know, but an FAQ section is a great thing to include on your web page to help with search engine optimisation.

Yes and no. Our websites include SEO features, that allow someone with the know-how to go in and tweak all the technical or on page aspects of the website to their liking. SEO is more of a process however, and requires a full strategy across, content, technical, digital marketing, pay per click, and outreach. We're not the people to help with that strategy, but holy moly, we know some good people who can help.
